If you're currently navigating a custody arrangement in Texas, it's important to stay informed about updates to possession schedules. The Expanded Standard Possession Order (ESPO) outlines when each parent has the right to possession and access to their child, and it’s commonly used in Texas family law cases.
To help you better understand what the 2025 ESPO looks like, we’ve created a user-friendly summary calendar that reflects the possession schedule under the Texas Family Code.
You can download it here:
What Is the Expanded Standard Possession Order?
The Expanded Standard Possession Order (sometimes referred to as the "Extended SPO") gives the noncustodial parent the option to pick up the child from school at the beginning of their weekend and drop them off at school at the end. It also extends holiday and summer visitation periods. This schedule is presumed to be in the best interest of children over the age of three and is frequently adopted by the courts.
Why It Matters
Understanding the ESPO is crucial if:
You’re unsure about your weekend or holiday visitation rights
You're preparing for summer or back-to-school transitions
You’ve recently modified your custody order or are considering it
A Word of Caution: Review Your Court Orders
Before relying on this calendar, please carefully review your current court orders. While the ESPO is common, not every possession order follows the same format. Your order may have modifications that override the standard schedule.
